Palm Pre: A Twitter Update (Updated)
I redownloaded and reinstalled Tweed and now it’s working fine. The client has one interesting feature: A “insert location” button that adds a link to a Google map showing your present GPS location. The drawback is that once this is converted to a short URL, the reader of the tweet has no way of knowing what that link points to. Since many of my tweets, and most of the interesting tweets from people I follow, contain links to substantive Web pages, including the location URL is just going to get confusing.
In my Palm Pre column I stated incorrectly that there was no Twitter client for the Pre. This may have been true when I wrote it, but it isn’t correct as of now. There are, in fact, two: Tweed, from Pivotal Labs, and Spaz from Funkatron Productions.
Tweed is hard to find because it doesn’t appear in the App Catalog’s list of Social Networking apps. But it doesn’t much matter, because the app didn’t work for me anyway. After downloading and installing it, all I could get it to do was to display a splash screen.
Despite an unfortunate name, Spaz was a happier experience. It’s a perfectly good, if unexceptional, Twitter app.
Still nothing from Facebook, though.
