Record Keepers

A host of high-powered tech companies have launched e-health initiatives:

MICROSOFT HEALTHVAULT Consumers enter medical histories on a Web site or ask providers to upload information. Users can also set devices such as heart-rate monitors to send data automatically.

GOOGLE HEALTH Individuals choose which health details to include in records stored on Google servers. Google is also enlisting insurers and hospitals to feed information directly into the records.

DOSSIA Funded by Intel, Wal-Mart, and others, this nonprofit sells its software to companies, for use by employees. Employee health data are gathered automatically from insurers and pharmacies.
