The Dow fell 312 points and the S&P 500 was off 3.45% on Friday, but U.S. stocks managed to avoid the panicked plunge in Asian markets overnight

U.S. stocks fell sharply Friday after huge losses and evidence of panic in other equity markets around the world. However, major U.S. indexes avoided the deep plunge many had feared, partly thanks to an unexpected rise in U.S. home sales.
