RIP: Gideon Baws, ShynolaHelen Walters
Many years ago, I used to write for a design magazine in the UK. As an office, one of our favorite moments would always be the arrival of a new film from Shynola. We’d grab the tape and all gather round the tiny TV to see what they’d been up to now. Invariably, it was something astonishing. One of the most talented animation collectives in the world, they’ve created pop videos for artists from Blur to Beck along with advertising for companies including Nike and PlayStation. Amazingly skillful, with an unerringly beautiful aesthetic, their work has gone from strength to strength. So it was a real shock to hear that one of the four founders, Gideon Baws, died suddenly recently, at age 33. I’ll never forget seeing the video embedded below for the first time. It was made for the musicians Lambchop and its gentle simplicity gets me every time. If you have a minute, watch it. Meantime, sympathy and sincere condolences to Gideon’s family and friends.
