Let's Talk about Sex....

June is Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender month at McGraw-Hill, and I think that’s the case in many places. As a straight female, I’m not going to pretend I know what kinds of issues and prejudices GLBT people encounter either at work or outside of it, but I know any kind of prejudice directed at them is wrong. Why am I writing about this in a blog about generational tension?

For a couple of reasons. One, I think that younger people are more accepting of alternate (is that the right word? I don't mean to offend if it isn't, and apologies if need be) lifestyles, and if they happen to work with people who aren't accepting--who may or may not be "older"--those who realize that these issues have nothing to do with whether someone does a good job can set a good example. A shout out to everyone who realizes that these things don't matter--in the workplace or out of it. Two, it got me thinking about prejudice in the workplace in general. Do we unfairly assume that "Boomers think this way," and "Gen X is all about this" and "Well, you know how Gen Y is." No, I'm not going to ask if we can't all just get along, but can't we at least be open-minded and fair and focus on what matters about our colleagues? Have you been the victim of prejudice, of one kind or another? How did you deal with it?
