Chiles rellenos in Big Bend

I’m sitting on a hill about a mile from the Mexican border, in Terlingua, TX., My wife’s hammock is creaking.

I’ve been reading 1491, by Charles Mann. Highly recommend it for anyone interested in the Americas, and what they might have been. He makes the case that the Mexicans deserve a place among the world’s great civilizations if for nothing else than developing corn, along with tomatoes, peppers and beans. They were master agronomists. Whether you’re eating Italian or Thai, a good case can be made that you’re eating Mexican. Down here by the Rio Grande, I’m close to the source, and my stomach is full of it. Tomorrow I’m riding a horse. Back in the BW saddle next week.
