Fidel Castro Resigns as Cuba's President

The Cuban leader formally declares his intention to hand over the reins of power after almost 50 years of near-single-handed rule

Aging Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who hasn't been seen in public since falling ill 19 months ago, used his still-mighty pen and apparently intact intellect to tell Cubans Jan. 19 that he is stepping down from the presidency of the island nation he has ruled single-handedly for nearly a half century.
