Math rescues Woody Guthrie recording

Good story in Science News about how a mathematician rescued the grammy-winning Woody Guthrie recording. Jamie Howarth and his team listened for other noises in the distorted old recording. They heard engine noise. Usually you’d think this would make the recording even worse. But they used to sound of the engine as a clock. If they could make it consistent, the music would follow suit.
