Martha Stewart, Francis Ford Coppola and illy Coffee Market Together. What's That About?

I was eating at the Landmark restaurant in the TimeWarner building in New York and, as I was leaving, ran into Martha Stewart and Francis Ford Coppola sitting together with folks from illy—all drinking coffee, of course. It was a weird and mad scene, with people photographing Martha and shouting at her (lots of “love yous” and “you’re my inspiration.”) and I couldn’t quite figure out what was happening.

So I Googled today and it turns out that it was for a good thing. An auction of one-of-a-kind cups designed by, among others, Francis Ford Coppola, Julian Schnabel, and David Byrne was being auctioned off at Per Se, perhaps the most expensive restaurant in history (US history at least). illy was the key sponsor. It was part of Share Our Strength.

The money goes to schools in Ethiopia, where coffee was invented, according to illy.

Odd experience. Perhaps no odder than the Artists for OLPC at Miami Basel on Thursday.
