Tesco Takes a Fresh Look at Japan

By offering both higher quality foods and prepared fare, the British retail giant thinks it can stand out in Japan's crowded convenience market

Tesco (TSCDY) has plenty of ambition. The supermarket operator is gearing up to open dozens of Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets in the U.S., usually described as a graveyard for British retailers. By February, the company plans to ink leases on 100 of the outlets in Arizona, California, and Nevada and is earmarking $500 million a year for its U.S. push (see BusinessWeek.com, 2/16/06, "Tesco: California Dreaming").
