More M&A deals were announced as indexes push into record territory, then retreat

After showing signs it would be a record-breaking day, U.S. stock markets pulled back late in the session Wednesday to end the day down. For the third day in a row, the S&P 500 pulled back mid-afternoon from what would have been a record close.
