New Technorati Search: Beyond the Blog
So Technorati has decided it’s time to go mainstream and is introducing an overhaul of its search service. Tagging is there, but the word is gone. The smarts of the blogosphere are there, but Technorati did away with all the clutter that might pleases a geek.
Good thing. The new Technorati is much sleeker. It allows you to plug in one term, and see all the different ways that thing appears, whether video or blogs or whatever. It’s what Technorati calls a 360 degree view. It takes away the notion that, oh, you know you’re looking for a blog post or a podcast and just assumes you’re looking for information, and blogs, and podcasts make up that information.
It’s a real turning point. Here we have the company that was one of the trendsetters in defining blogging deciding that to reach out to the rest of the world, they need to pull in all the things that people like: video, blog posts, music, and drop the jargon and geekery. Or as Dave Sifry told me: “We have been trying to figure out how we expand what we do and make it easier for everyday human beings to be able to find out what’s happening now about everything.” It’s a sign of maturity for sure.
“The problem we had was that every single search was siloed, there was post search, viewer search, video search. If you’re my sister, she’s, like, I don’t get it. What we really sat down and realized was that there had to be an easier way,” says Sifry.
A couple of stats that geeks will love: The new Technorati tracks 1/2 billion tagged items, combining them, rather than separating them as in the past with keywords. The company also says it did a major upgrade to the backend indexing structure, to speed up the time between when something is posted to a blog and it shows up on Technorati. And to please hardcore bloggers, Technorati still has a separate blog search service called at S.technoroati.com that loads faster.
