S&P 500 Falls Short of Record Close

A fresh batch of M&A deals lifted sentiment early, but stocks retreated late in the day

Stocks pulled back from all-time highs during Monday's trading session. The late moves dashed hopes that the market, lifted by M&A deals, would break another record for the Dow and finally surpass the S&P 500's seven-year-old all-time closing high.
