News Corp. Posts Quarterly Profit

DIRECTV Group's earnings rise; Cisco sees revenue growth in fiscal 2007; plus more stocks in the news Wednesday

News Corp. (NWS) reported second quarter income from continuing operations of $822 million.

DIRECTV Group (DTV) posted 29 cents vs. 9 cents fourth quarter EPS on a 16% revenue rise.

Cisco Systems (CSCO) posted 31 cents vs. 22 cents second quarter earnings per share (EPS) on a 27% sales rise. The company sees fiscal year 2007 revenue growth of 16% to 17%.

Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC) posted 85 cents vs. 88 cents third quarter EPS from continuing operations despite a 1.7% revenue rise. The company sees a fiscal year 2007 revenue rise of about 2%. To delay Forms 10-Q for the second and third quarter until it has completed the review of its stock option grant practices.

Brooks Automation (BRKS) posted 23 cents first quarter EPS from continuing operations vs. a 14 cents loss on a 76% revenue rise. The company sees second quarter revenue of $185 million to $190 million and GAAP EPS of 25 cents to 30 cents.

Cigna Corp (CI) posted $2.61 vs. $1.87 adjusted fourth quarter EPS from operations despite flat revenue. Sees $2.35 to $2.55 first quarter adjusted EPS from operations and $9.95 to $10.55 in 2007.

Whirlpool Corp (WHR) posted $1.67 vs. $1.83 fourth quarter EPS from continuing operations despite a 25% revenue rise. Cites significantly higher material prices, lower US industry appliance demand and higher interest expense. The company sees $8.00 to $8.50 2007 EPS from continuing operations.

Apollo Group (APOL) posted better-than-expected 66 cents vs. 73 cents first quarter EPS as higher costs and expenses offset a 6.3% revenue rise.
