Dow Chemical Posts Lower Net

Aetna posts stronger results; Liz Claiborne sinks under costs; plus more stocks in the news Thursday

Dow Chemical (DOW) posted 53 cents vs. 82 cents third quarter EPS on a 9.8% sales rise. Notes third quarter 2006 EPS includes 45 cents charge for restructuring activities. Sets $2 billion stock buyback.

Aetna (AET) posted 84 cents vs. 61 cents third quarter operating EPS on an 11% revenue rise. Raises $2.77-$2.79 2006 operating EPS guidance to $2.83. Sets preliminary 2007 operating EPS guidance at $3.26.

Red Hat (RHAT) Shares sank after news Oracle will provide enterprise support for Linux at a substantial discount to prices being offered by Red HAT.

Symantec (SYMC) Posts $0.23 vs. $0.22 second quarter operating EPS on 8% higher pro forma revenue.

Liz Claiborne (LIZ) posted 93 cents vs. $1.06 third quarter EPS as higher selling, general & administrative, and other expenses offset a 2.5% revenue rise. Refines previous guidance and now sees a 2006 net sales rise in the low single digits, as well as EPS of $2.50-$2.55.

St. Paul Travelers (STA) posted $1.47 vs. 23 cents third quarter EPS on a 1.2% rise in gross premiums written. Raises $4.90-$5.10 2006 EPS guidance to $5.50-$5.65.

Safenet (SFNT) estimates a15 cents third quarter loss vs. one cent EPS as restatement costs tied to stock option accounting issues offset a 22% revenue rise. Notes it is undergoing review of stock option grants. Sees $78 million to $82 million fourth quarter revenue and $288 million to $292 million in 2006.

Applebee's (APPB) posted 20 cents vs. 28 cents third quarter EPS on 2.3% lower system-wide same-store sales and 5.0% higher revenue. Sees 1%-3% lower comps for the rest of the year. Sees $1.10-$1.13 2006 EPS.

Comcast (CMCSA) posted 58 cents vs. 10 cents third quarter EPS on a 22% revenue rise. posted 26 cents adjusted third quarter EPS. Sees 10%-11% 2006 cable revenue growth.
