Ford Motor's new CEO, Alan Mulally, was warned by his boss and recruiter, chairman William Ford Jr., last July that there were going to be grim days ahead. It wasn't until September, though, just as he was signing on to run the troubled automaker, that it became apparent his first earnings conference, for the third quarter, would be the company's worst in almost 18 years.
