Street-Level Reporting At Its Finest. Or Not.

A few days ago I was walking in midtown Manhattan, and I caught sight of someone I know who’s in a reasonably high-level position at National Geographic.

Under ordinary circumstances I would have stopped and said hi, but said individual just had this face on—was clearly in a terrible and very dark mood; was giving off a powerful do-not-disturb vibe. So I didn’t. For a moment I puzzled over why this person seemed so down, but I forgot about the non-encounter within fifteen minutes. As you often do.

Until I saw this yesterday at fishbowldc, the broad outlines of which a spokeswoman confirms: National Geographic announced to its staff this week cut staff by around 20 positions via buyouts.
