Five Gorgeous-Looking 2D Games

What's good about 2D graphics? Here are five games that are worth playing even if the competition from 3D is undeniable

Many publishers are quick to write off 2D graphics because the buying public is enamored with 3D, and judging by some of the latest sales figures, we'd be hard-pressed to disagree. But while polygons drive the industry to billion dollar profits they just don't hold up as well as their sprite-based counterparts. 3DO, Saturn, and PSOne games looked good at the time, but we encourage you to go through those systems' back catalogues and compare the games to titles such as Gears of War and Metal Gear Solid 4. The old stuff isn't pretty, but go and put Super Mario Bros. 3 next to Yoshi's Island and you'll see what we're getting at. 2D may be on its way out, but it's still a very attractive dimension, one that's been used to create a host of exceptional graphics. Such titles as Rayman, Super Mario World, Sonic and Knuckles, and Gunstar Heroes shine on their respective platforms, but only a handful can be considered as the most gorgeous looking 2D games of all time. Flame us all you want, but these five games (and franchises... we cheated a bit) are shining examples of 2D at its best.
