Plenty of ink has been spilled -- and trees felled -- on stories about business' increasing environmental and social awareness. But the entry of bigwigs such as Wal-Mart Stores into the green marketplace makes plotting a green strategy much more difficult for small companies. In our cover story, contributor Ernest Beck explains both the pitfalls and the promise of this new green landscape, and shows entrepreneurs how to benefit from a smart green strategy.
We'd like to think this kind of sophisticated service journalism is one reason SmallBiz was honored with a Jesse H. Neal Award this year, for Best Single Issue. Thanks to all of our colleagues who worked so hard to make SmallBiz a success.
In addition, Lisa Bergson's MyCompany column won a regional award from the American Society of Business Publication Editors, and will be considered for a national award this summer. We're thrilled to be recognized by both organizations.
The award for MyCompany is a tad bittersweet. Lisa's last column for us was about her quest for venture capital. She got her funding -- obviously, congratulations are in order -- and her new investors promptly asked her to stop writing the column. Having written about many venture-backed companies, I wasn't shocked, but we will miss Lisa's candor and sense of humor.
A number of you have asked when SmallBiz might become a monthly publication. We're not there yet, but it's time to keep a close eye on that mailbox. This summer, we will go to a bimonthly schedule, bringing you the best of small business news and ideas six times a year instead of four. We can't wait.
We're also collaborating with BusinessWeek.com on a special project called Best Entrepreneurs Under 25. It's our celebration of young entrepreneurs, with a particular emphasis on those yet to reach their 25th birthdays. We'll be recognizing 25 young stars in North America and another 25 in both Europe and Asia. As of Aug. 1, you can help us discover your favorite young moguls by bragging about them at http://www.businessweek.com/smallbiz/under25.htm. Until then, you can reach me, as always, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
