Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales Gets $4 million in Funding
Wales has pulled in $4 million in venture funding for Wikia, a for-profit startup that provides tools and hosting for people who want to create community wikis, around news or sports or local zoning topics. Wikia, which is ad supported, looks to me like another way to get into citizen media. (Which may explain why Dan Gillmor, a vocal advocate of citizens media, is an investor).
Wikia's other investors are Bessemer Venture Partners and the Omidyar Network, which had participation from angel investors Marc Andreessen, Gillmor, Reid Hoffman, Joichi Ito, and Mitch Kapor.
