Can you believe that women hoping to advance their careers once were advised not to keep personal pictures on their desk lest the boss think they cared more about their family than their job? In more recent history, when BusinessWeek moved to another floor in the same building, our then editor-in-chief sent out a memo saying we needed approval to hang anything on the walls. He didn't want untidy personal effects spoiling the professionalism of our spanking new digs.
