Why is a daily podcast where someone reads an article appealing?

An editor here asked me the other day what I thought of podcasts where someone reads you an article. My first unvarnished response was "Yuck." And then I hightailed it over to iTunes to see what was on the top 100 list and lo and behold (imagine clouds parting and a ray of sun shining from the sky) there, at No. 65, was Slate's podcast where Andy Bowers reads a story a day. (Yesterday it was a story about the gossip in Austin, Texas around Cheney's hunting accident.)
