2005 Chevrolet Corvette
Strong Points: Exterior styling; Updated interior; Drivetrain performance; Brakes
Weak Points: Suspension
Mfr.'s Suggested Retail Price: $53,590
All-new for 2005, the Corvette has some needed updates but maintains certain characteristics that should have been left behind.
More compact than the previous model, the new Vette is a beautiful car, with eye-catching styling cues like covered headlights. Its redesigned interior features a handsome and distinctive dashboard. But as in previous years, Chevy continues to use cheap-looking interior materials, which is not in keeping with this model's price tag.
On the road, the Corvette rockets forward at the touch of the throttle. If only the suspension were on par with the engine. With the optional Z51 performance package, the ride is harsh and jarring; the car bounces over bumps with little suppleness. Driving at fast speeds can be a demanding venture, requiring full concentration.
The most fun in the Corvette comes in driving at moderate cruising speed with the removable top stowed away and onlookers left to drool.
