Lexus LS460 A Techno Marvel For Perfectionists

Lexus introduced the LS460 here, a replacement for its flagship LS430 now in showrooms. All I have to say is…what could they possibly have left out.

-The industry’s first eight-speed automatic transmission

-Built-in hard disk that can hold up to 4,000 songs of digital music. It takaes three years to listen to all of them, about the same time as most leases.

-Combined port and direct-injection fuel system for the 4.6-liter V-8 engine. The engine will be rated at about 380 horsepower and 370 pounds-feet of torque. It will go 0 to 60 mph in less than 5.5 seconds.

-A Mark Levinson sound system with 19 speakers.

-Reclining rear seats with foot rests and massage systems.

-Individual DVD monitors for rear-seat passengers.

-Sensors for the climate control system that measure cabin temperature and body temperature of the occupants.

-A hands-free parking system that will enable the car to pull itself into a parking space – a feature already offered by Toyota on some vehicles in Japan.

ON top of all that, Toyota chief Jim Press tells me that all the wood in each car was sourced from the same tree to achieve perfect consistency.

And…the opening of the cup-holder and ash tray were calibrated to emerge from their console pods at exactly the same speed.

It’s a good thing. If there’s anything I hate, it’s when the ash tray and cupholder are out of sync.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
