Innovation vs. design blah blah.

I just got back from the Design For The New China Markets Conference to see the debate on innovation vs. design is heating up. The Fortune magazine conference on innovation spent a huge amount of time on this battle over innovation vs. design. Folks, I have to say that I think this debate is BORING. The design profession may be indulging in a navel-gazing exercise of immense proportions that is important to no one but designers. You folks are wasting a lot of time. There are more important things to discuss, like what different kinds of ethnolographic methodologies do we need when observing consumers in China, India, America, Russia, etc.? How do we codify all the data? How do you build design curricula that you can teach across cultures (Korea is doing great work in this area).
