Amazon Rises on Record Holiday Sales
Amazon.com (AMZN ) was higher Monday after it said this was the company's busiest holiday season ever. It notes consumer electronics sales surpassed book sales on Amazon.com during the Thanksgiving weekend.
Gartner Inc. (IT ) will acquire Meta Group (METG ) in a $162 million deal. Terms: $10 cash per Meta share. Gartner says it doesn't expect the deal to have a material impact on its 2005 operating results, but expects it will be meaningfully accretive to earnings thereafter.
Sirius Satellite (SIRI )says it has surpassed its yearend target of 1 million subscribers.
Affymetrix (AFFX ) received FDA regulatory clearance for its GeneChip System 3000Dx (GCS 3000Dx), an instrumentation system to analyze in vitro diagnostic microarrays.
Sharper Image (SHRP ) says Holiday company sales (December 1 to 24) were up about 4% (excluding wholesale), but trending below expectations. Same-store sales were in line with guidance. The company cuts fourth-quarter earnings per share guidance to 94 cents to 99 cents and fiscal 2005 earnings per share to 90 cents to 95 cents.
Cellegy Pharmaceuticals (CLGY ) says the FDA issued a Not Approvable Letter for Cellegesic, Cellegy's trial drug for treatment of pain associated with chronic anal fissure.
Cal-Maine Foods (CALM ) posted a 23-cent second-quarter loss, vs. 73 cents earnings per share on a 39% sales drop. The company cites substantially lower egg prices.
Piper Jaffray upgrades Sonic Solutions (SNIC ) to outperform from market perform.
Elbit Systems (ESLT ) reaches agreements with Koor Industries (KOR ) for Koor to buy 9.8% of Elbit for $99 Million from Federmann Enterprises, while Elbit buys Koor's 32% holding in military communications products maker Tadiran Communications Ltd. for $146 million.
Shipping companies, such as oil-tanker operator Frontline (FRO ), may suffer disruptions in Southeast Asia following massive quake and tidal waves. Separately, European MarketScope reports Persian Gulf Asia tanker rates have fallen to three-month lows.
Corrections Corp. (CXW ) received a contract from the Federal Bureau of Prisons to house about 1,195 inmates at its correction center in Northeast Ohio. Under the award, the company could earn revenues of up to about $129 million during the initial 4-year term of contract.
Mechanical Technology (MKTY ) says Fletcher International invested $8 million in the company in exchange for 1.262 million Mechnical Technology shares at a price of $6.34 per share.
