Europe Stocks Close Lower

The Nikkei and Hang Seng also lost ground

European stock markets closed lower on Wednesday. London's Financial Times-Stock Exchange lost 38.80 points, or 0.83%, to close at 4616.40. In London, several companies did little to excite the market with trading updates. Diageo was down 1.08% after it reported that first quarter trading had been in line and confirmed guidance. Mining and metal stocks were sharply lower after Steel Dynamics said steel prices in the fourth quarter will soften somewhat, hurting sector shares in Japan and Europe. Investors eyed Chinese third-quarter GDP on Friday, amid concerns it may show a slowdown.
