Talk to author John G. Miller and the first impression is of good-natured, even-tempered affability. Chat a little longer, and something else begins to emerge. Running like a current beneath the geniality and dry wit is an emphasis on the temptation of self-delusion and the folly of surrendering to it. As he concedes, that may be a product of growing up the in the shadow of the pulpit. The son of an upstate New York preacher who also served as Cornell University's longtime wrestling coach, Miller thanks his dad for equipping him with a reverence for truth and a willingness to tackle tough challenges.
