The sound-bite heard 'round the world
Teresa Heinz Kerry, who will be addressing the Democratic convention tonight, garnered unwelcome headlines after she told an editorial page editor for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review to "shove it." The newspaper is owned and published by Richard Mellon Scaife, the extremely wealthy and conservative Pennsylvanian who has long given generously to right wing groups and causes. Interestingly, Teresa Heinz has a connection to the family—she’s very close to Scaife’s wife, Barbara, who actually cut the Kerry campaign a $2,000 check (the legal maximum for an individual). People have long said John Kerry—or the Kerry campaign—wasn’t in a position to control Teresa. Barbara seems to exercise some independence in the Scaife household, too.
