Stocks Finish Sharply Lower

Losses in the major indexes deepened into the close, despite Microsoft's dividend news and Greenspan's testimony

The major indexes finished sharply lower Wednesday, despite plenty of good news, including Microsoft's (MSFT ) plan to raise its quarterly dividend, make a special cash payout to shareholders, and repurchase stock. The Nasdaq's losses deepened on weakness in semiconductor and Internet stocks. Investors remain spooked by an unclear earnings outlook and high oil prices, says Standard & Poor's MarketScope.
