Asia markets finish lower; Canada shares slip

European stock markets closed higher on Thursday. London's FTSE 100 index was up 40.90 points, or 0.93%, to 4,453.80 in reaction to Wall Street's late Wednesday rally. Some investors were encouraged by a report that England's home starts rose 4% in the first quarter. But geopolitical tensions remain at the forefront of investors' minds, says Standard & Poor's.
