Europe Stocks End Mostly Lower

Asia stocks end higher; Canada shares make solid gains

European stocks finished mostly lower Friday as Ahold's results put a cap on strength. London's Financial Times-Stock Exchange 100 index edged up 4.30 points, or 0.10%, to 4,344.00. Germany's DAX index slumped 63.69 points, or 1.77%, to 3,514.33. In Paris, the CAC 40 shed 3.77 points, or 0.11%, to 3,353.72.

Asian stocks finished higher. Japan's Nikkei 225 index added 12.74 points, or 0.12%, to finish at 11,037.89, down from early morning highs due to profit taking. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index increased 16.92 points, or 0.14%, to 12,044.49.

Canada's benchmark S&P/TSX fell 75.33 points, or 0.97%, to 7,717.47.
