Israel Wants More U.S. Aid

Cash-strapped from conflict with the Palestinians and a two-year economic crunch, the Israeli government asked the U.S. in early January for $4 billion in new military aid and $8 billion in loan guarantees to finance public works projects and spur job creation. Washington sources say the Administration is likely to be receptive to an aid package but is unlikely to allow U.S. money to finance Jewish settlements on the West Bank. The U.S. provides Israel with some $3 billion in aid each year.
