Canada's benchmark S&P/TSX fell 142 points, or 2.08%, to 6,677.76.

European stock markets finished sharply lower Monday amid ongoing uncertainty about the global economy. In London, the Financial Times-Stock Exchange 100 index shed 229.60 points, or 5.44%, to 3,994.50. France's CAC 40 fell 189.60 points, or 5.40%, to 3,323.74. Asian markets ended lower. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index lost 226.30 points or 2.13%, to 10,375.15, as the strengthening of the Japanese yen against the U.S. dollar triggered further earnings fears over Japan's major plays.
