Goldman Cuts Estimates on Software Makers

A team of Goldman analysts says its recent IT surveys confirm the second quarter is shaping up to be another very challenging quarter

Goldman Sachs cut earnings estimates on a host of software companies, including Rational Software (RATL ).

A team of Goldman analysts says its recent IT surveys (including the release today of a survey conducted with Gartner) confirm the second quarter is shaping up to be another very challenging quarter. Also, budgets for the rest of 2002 are not likely to change much from current levels. There has been some underspending of IT budgets that will likely persist through the second quarter or third quarter, with the potential for some budget flush in the fourth quarter.

The estimate cuts for 2002 and 2003 reflect survey results and anecdotal data points, all of which provide a composite picture of ongoing IT spending constraints and the likely slower pace of recovery for the industry going through 2003.
