The IBM-Sony-Toshiba deal to develop next-generation chipmaking techniques could change the industry's entire landscape

Sony, IBM, and Toshiba aren't playing games when it comes to their new collaboration -- even though it was Sony's white-hot PlayStation that provided the spark for the chip-development deal. For more than a decade, chipmakers have been marching to the digital beat of personal computers. But with the excitement draining out of the PC market, top chip producers IBM and Toshiba are seeking help from Sony in developing production techniques for tomorrow's chips. The deal came to light on Apr. 2.
