Ten Consistent Performers

S&P's latest screen found stocks with a strong post-September track record -- and top STARS rankings

By David Braverman

Nothing beats a stock with a solid track record, especially in a dicey market. And a strong analyst recommendation lends added appeal.

That's the thinking behind our latest screen. We looked for stocks that posted price gains in each of the last five months, from September to January inclusive. The stocks had to pass another filter: They had to be ranked either 4 STARS (accumulate) or 5 STARS (strong buy) by Standard & Poor's analysts. That means S&P expects these issues to outperform the overall market in the next 6 to 12 months -- something they've already shown themselves capable of doing.

These 10 issues emerged: Abbott Labs (ABT )

Ball Corp. (BLL )

Ballard Power Systems (BLDP )

Choicepoint (CPS )

Commerce Bancorp (CBH )

FTI Consulting (FCN )

Gtech Holdings (GTK )

Immunex (IMNX )

RadioShack (RSH )

Wal-Mart (WMT )
