Atmel Rises on Analyst Upgrade

Merrill raises estimates on AMD; TMP will not up bid for; plus more of today's stocks on the move

A.G. Edwards raised its rating on Atmel Corp. (ATML ) to strong buy. Cardiac Science (DFIB ) says it has been selected to outfit several airports with its Automated External Defibrillators.

Merrill Lynch raises its estimates on Advanced Micro Devices (AMD ).

Bio Transplant (BTRN ) says its Phase I/II trial utilizing its proprietary AlloMune System demonstrated encouraging anti-tumor results in majority of patients afflicted with end-stage refractory lymphoma.

United Auto Group (UAG ) expects to exceed $0.27 4Q First Call consensus earnings per share estimate by at least $0.04. It cites continued steady growth in same-store revenues.

SBS Technologies (SBSE ) sees $8.5M-$10M 2Q loss, which includes $6M to $7M inventory writedown. It expects to meet the low end of sales projections.

TMP Worldwide (TMPW )says it will not modify terms of its previously announced offer to acquire (HOTJ ).

Sharper Image (SHRP ) says total company business for the five-day period ended Dec. 24 increased over 10% from the same period last year. The company notes improved margins.

Atherogenics (AGIX ) will increase its investment in R&D to $28M in 2002 from the forecasted $17M in 2001. The company sees $1.15 2002 net loss per share, including non-cash expenses, versus estimated $0.69 in 2001.

Stewart & Stevenson (SSSS ) says its Tactical Vehicle Systems unit will receive a $374M contract from the U.S. Army's Tank--Automotive & Armament Command.

ACT Teleconferencing (ACTT ) plans to acquire Proximity for $4.8M. A major portion of the deal will be satisfied by the issuance of 350,000 ACT shares valued at $10 per share.

General Mills (GIS ) announced the sale of its 50% ownership stake in Ice Cream partners joint venture to Nestle. It sees pre-tax proceeds of $641 million.]

Apple Computer (AAPL ) plans about $200M in capital expenditures for fiscal 2002 in an effort to increase retail presence and boost market share, according to the Wall Street Journal.
