JDS's Straus: Banking on Broadband

Says the CEO about high-speed access: Applications and business models that allow somebody to make money will bring growth

When Czech immigrant and researcher Jozef Straus cofounded optical-components maker JDS Uniphase in 1981, Wall Street could hardly have guessed his company would become a lynchpin in the global economy 20 years later. Today, JDS (JDSU ) makes pieces of equipment that are essential to running data networks worldwide. With Straus as CEO and president, the company grew by absorbing and merging with dozens of rivals to become the world leader in the industry.
