European Markets End Mixed

Canada shares rally on U.S. rate cut; Asian markets end mixed

European markets finished mixed. In London, the Financial Times-Stock Exchange 100 index added 5 points, or 0.10%, to 5,214.10. The biggest contributors to the gain in the FTSE included Vodafone, GlaxoSmithKline and banking concerns Royal Bank of Scotland, LLoyds, HSBC Holdings and Barclays. In France, the CAC 40 lost 23.65 points, or 0.53%, to 4,461.69. In Germany, the DAX Index was down 47.46 points, or 1%, to 4,707.65.

Canada's benchmark Toronto Stock Exchange 300 Composite Index closed up 66.17, or 0.9% at 7,145.50 on news the the U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates by a half percentage points.

Asian markets ended mixed. Japan's Nikkei climbed 186.18 points, or 1.72%, to 10,633.72 aided by drug and tech shares. In Hong Kong, the market gained 74.67 points, or 0.72%, to 10,356.05.
