Substantive Style

CLIENT: Wieden + Kennedy

ARCHITECT: Allied Works Architecture, Portland, Ore.

BUILDING TYPE: Office for ad agency

Many advertising agencies try too hard to be cutting edge when designing their headquarters and end up with space bordering on the wacky. Not Wieden + Kennedy. It converted a historic warehouse in Portland, Ore., into an airy, cubicle-free workspace that conveys a sense of solidity in addition to encouraging creativity. Invitingly open, the building boasts a 400-seat amphitheater, a screening room, a gym, and a cafe. The aim, beyond comfortably housing 500 employees, is to stimulate collaboration and to reinforce the agency's position as a creative hub. "It's a substantial architecture, rather than a series of visual gimmicks or iconic gimmicks within the space," says juror Charles B. Rose.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
