A Water Plant Flowers

CLIENT: University of Pennsylvania

ARCHITECT: Leers Weinzapfel Associates, Boston

BUILDING TYPE: Chilled-water plant

It might have spelled design disaster: erecting a 20,000-ton water plant at a key entry point to the University of Pennsylvania. Instead, the university viewed it as a chance to create a visual gateway. The plant was wrapped in a perforated steel screen that shimmers in the sun and becomes a translucent, glowing totem at night. Against the odds, it has become an instant landmark. "There's something about it that just makes you want to love it," says Terence Riley.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
