Qwest shares take a hit; Sun Micro says orders are tracking higher; plus more of today's stocks in the news

Bear Stearns upgraded Royal Caribbean (RCL ) to attractive from neutral. On Tuesday the company posted $0.82 Q3 EPS.

Nextcard Inc (NXCD ) posted a $1.00 Q3 loss vs. $0.27 loss and hired Goldman Sachs to explore the sale of the company. Raymond James downgraded to market perform.

Qwest Communications (Q ) posted a $0.08 Q3 loss vs. $0.14 EPS (pro forma normalized). AG Edwards, Merrill and Davenport downgraded.

Sun Microsystems (SUNW ) V.P. Steve McGowan reportedly says orders at company are tracking higher so far in Q2 vs. a year ago.

Prudential says Xilinx (XLNX ) has yet to see any weakness from September 11, and Europe appears stable. Views this as positive and has a buy rating.

Tetra Technology (TTEK ) was awarded two new contracts, over 50 tasks orders in support of natl response to bioterrorism.

Allied Waste (AW ) announced that president and COO Larry Henk resigned to pursue other interests. Effective immediately, Tom Van Weelden, chairman and CEO, will assume all duties.

Continental Airlines (CAL ) posted a $1.76 Q3 loss vs. $2.21 EPS on a 15% revenue drop and posted $0.05 Q3 EPS including a grant from the Air Transportation Stabilization Act, severance, and other special charges. Excluding the grant, profit fell 98%.

Comcast (CMCSK ) posted 17% higher Q3 operating cash flow on 20% revenue rise. S&P maintains accumulate.

Qwest Communications (Q ) posted a $0.08 Q3 loss vs. $0.14 EPS (pro forma normalized). AG Edwards downgraded to hold.

Tommy Hilfiger (TOM ) posted $0.53 vs. $0.49 2Q EPS on 2.4% higher revenue and now expects $1.30-$1.56 fiscal 2002 EPS, an increase of $0.06 from previous guidance.

Sara Lee (SLE ) posted $0.26 vs. $0.29 1Q EPS on flat sales and sees $0.36-$0.40 Q2 EPS, and $1.37-$1.43 for fiscal 2002.

John Harland (JH ) posted $0.42 vs. $0.41 Q3 EPS from operations despite a slight sales drop and adjusted Q4 EPS forecast to $0.37-$0.42, resulting in $1.25-$1.30 2001 EPS.

Adobe Systems (ADBE ) cut Q4 guidance to $0.20-$0.22 EPS on $275M-$285M revenue. Adobe will cut 5% of workforce, and take a charge of about $8M-$10M. Merrill, CS First Boston cut estimates.

Pacificare (PHSY ) posted $0.52 vs. $0.04 Q3 EPS from operations. on 2% higher revenues and improved medical loss ratio. Merrill raised estimates. S&P maintains hold.

Mentor Graphics (MENT ) posted better than expected $0.12 vs. $0.23 Q3 EPS on 18% lower revenues. S&P maintains hold. Robertson Stephens downgraded to market perform.

Calgon Carbon (CCC ) posted $0.04 vs. $0.04 Q3 EPS on flat sales. Notes prices did not keep pace with energy, raw material cost increases, slowing demand for higher-value carbon products, higher production costs.

CIBC World upgraded Oracle (ORCL ) to buy from hold.

SCI Systems (SCI ) posted $0.10 vs. $0.37 Q1 cash EPS on 13% revenue drop. S&P maintains hold.

CenturyTel (CTL ) posted better than expected $0.45 vs. $0.47 Q3 operating EPS. S&P maintains hold.

TEVA Pharmaceutical (TEVA ) posted $0.58 VS. $0.34 Q3 per ADR on 12% revenue rise. Teva is confident that profitability will continue to increase and reportedly says it remains comfortable with EPS estimates.

Martha Stewart (MSO ) posted $0.10 vs. $0.08 Q3 EPS on 12.5% revenue rise and is comfortable with $0.45 2001 analyst estimates.

Orion Power (ORN ) posted $0.58 vs. $0.05 Q3 EPS on 7% revenue rise and anticipates meeting its $1.15 2001 EPS target, and reiterates $1.50 '02 guidance.

Applebee's ( APPB ) posted $0.44 vs. $0.40 Q3 EPS on 2.7% higher comparison sales and sees Q4 comp store sales of zero to 2%.

Fluor Corp. (FLR ) posted $0.57 vs. $0.38 Q3 EPS despite flat revenues.

Digi International (DSII ) agreed to acquire Netsilicon in a deal valued at about $50 million.
