Once jailed by the Suharto regime, economic czar Dorojatun Kuntjoro-Jakti today holds enormous power -- and faces some huge tasks

The atmosphere in the cavernous Finance Ministry, a Dutch Colonial building in central Jakarta, is almost giddy these days. The rupiah has appreciated by 20% since the election in late July of nationalist heroine Megawati Sukarnoputri as President. Her newly installed economic policy czar, Dorojatun Kuntjoro-Jakti, holds the unwieldy title of Coordinating Minister for Finance, Economy & Industry -- and Megawati's blessings.
