The latest fuel for investor fears: A warning from Sun Microsystems and a downbeat report on consumer spending

Stocks sank to their lowest levels in nearly five months on Aug. 30 -- with the Dow Jones industrial average closing below the psychologically sensitive 10,000 mark. The sell-off followed more profit warnings from the already depressed technology sector and a fresh batch of economic data that showed a slower pace in July for consumer spending -- which has so far buttressed the faltering economy.
