Oil and Gas Boost Canada Shares

European markets closed higher; Asian markets ended mixed

Canada's benchmark TSE 300 left Tuesday's session with a bullish print, closing up 50.78 points to 7692.20. Standard & Poor's thinks the close near its intraday high is a positive sign and could encourage some follow through activity Wednesday. Twelve of the 14 subindices rose and two fell, with the oil and gas group and tech-heavy industrials product index strongly advancing.

European markets closed higher. In London, the Financial Times 100 gained 82.40 points, or 1.51%, to 5,529.10. In France, the CAC 40 Index was up 51.80 points, or 1.03%, to 5085.51. Germany's DAX Index climbed 48.30 points, or 0.83%, to 5840.49.

Asian markets ended mixed. In Japan, the Nikkei lost 281.50, or 2.43%, to close at 11,860.77. The Hang Seng Index shed 230.03 points, or 1.90%, to close at 12,316.69.
