Canada Shares See a Slight Rebound
Canada's benchmark TSE 300 closed up 31.3 points to 7706.9 after a choppy day. Positive U.S. indices and -- finally -- a gain in key stock Nortel (+C$ 46 cents) helped. However, a 31-point gain pales in comparison to the 12-day, 626-point drop. Continued weakness in the Oil and Gold sectors were a weight. S&P will look for the TSE 300 to try to continue higher Friday but given the strong downtrend, the upside potential is limited.
European markets closed mixed. In London, the Financial Times 100 Index was down 58.20 points, or 1.02%, to 5641.40. In France, the CAC 40 Index ended lower by 35.52 points, or 0.69%, to 5,134.97. In Germany, the DAX Index gained 39.75 points, or 0.68%, to 5,915.79.
Asian markets ended higher. In Japan, the Nikkei gained 287.79 points, or 2.27%, to close at 12,962. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index added 268.74 points, or 2.08%, to close at 13,187.45.
