Stocks Close Lower

Investors were jittery over economic data ahead of the holiday weekend

Stocks closed lower, selling off sharply towards the end of a session marked by a lack of conviction by investors and light pre-holiday volume. Negativity in the market was primarily due to weaker than expected economic data and comments by Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan's comments on additional monetary easing before the Economics Club of New York.
