Canada Shares Make Slight Gains

Europe markets close mixed; Asia stocks tread higher

The TSE 300 enjoyed a bullish reversal Thursday (low 8047) and closed with a 16.5 point gain to 8147.7. Wednesday's fourth Fed cut continues to underpin the markets and the strong close in the U.S. indices was a support. Nortel released better than expected earnings just after the bell and this means the TSE 300 will shoot higher at Friday's open. Note Canadian CPI is due Friday at 7 a.m. EDT. The 8315 March peak (3/7) could be hit Friday.

London's Financial Times-Stock Exchange 100 index closed off 18.60 points, or 0.32%, to 5871.60 in profit taking. In Germany, the DAX Index added 17.03 points, or 0.28% finish the session at 6181.91. In France, the CAC 40 ended down 25.03 points, or 0.45%, to 5480.05.

Asian markets ended higher. In Tokyo, the Nikkei gained 226.49 points, or 1.66%, to close at 13868.28. Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng added 576.15 points, or 4.44%, to end at 13548.95
