Gateway's Waitt: "Price Won't Rule the Day"

Back in the corner office, the computer maker's founder explains how he intends to regain the glory days

Early this year, as Gateway's PC sales and stock price sagged, retired co-founder Ted Waitt called the members of his old management team and said, "I'm thinking about getting the band back together." On Jan. 29, he did just that, returning himself to the CEO's chair and replacing the management he had hired just 13 months earlier with the group that originally built Gateway into a leading consumer brand. One big reason for urgency: In the fourth quarter of last year, Gateway's share of the U.S. PC market dropped to 8.1% from 9.1% a year earlier.
